The Sandman comic series by Neil Gaiman become a sensation the moment viewers saw its first glimpse. Seeing this epic fantasy finally adapted for television filled fans with excitement. However, fans expressed their disappointment in casting Christie as Lucifer because they have already seen a male version of Lucifer in Netflix’s series with the same name. Neil Gaiman opened up about picking Gwendoline Christie as Lucifer in The Sandman

In a conversation with New York Times, the team asked Neil Gaiman about the world they are bringing onscreen and how the readers will connect them with this Netflix presentation of the comic. Of course, the fan backlash over Lucifer’s casting came up during the interview. Neil shared that he created the character of Lucifer in 1987, inspired by David Bowie. He imagined the appearance of Lucifer, someone like this folk singer. But he never defined sexuality, and even in the comics, the character does not have any gender-based posture.

“I made it very clear later that Lucifer was sexless, “ stated the executive producer.

Moreover, he revealed they were looking for someone who could just pull off the character tremendously. Eventually, they found the perfect match in Game of Thrones star and featured her as Lucifer.

“I loved Gwendoline’s Titania in “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” She was incredibly powerful as Brienne of Tarth,” Gaiman told NY Times.

The writer thinks she is a beautifully talented artist who can give a tough fight to the protagonist. This is why they took her as the main antagonist, the lord of hell, draped in black.
