Never judge a book by its cover—or a movie by the weight of its box office haul. It is easy to assume that only cinematic masterpieces make it to the blockbuster status, but that is only a half-baked notion at best. Marketing magic, big-name stars, catchy franchises, and even a little sprinkle of hype all play a role in getting people to line up for tickets. And that is precisely where a 2023 fantasy heist comedy, featuring the dashing Regé-Jean Page of Bridgerton fame, lacked.
Rob McElhenney, another unsung hero of comedy, recently gave this 2023 gem a nod and even rallied for a sequel for the film.

The film in question is Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, which graced the theaters in March 2023. Featuring Regé-Jean Page, Chris Pine, Hugh Grant, Michelle Rodriguez, Justice Smith, and Sophia Lillis, this fantasy caper will soon roll onto Netflix on February 26. As DiscussingFilm reported the exciting update, Rob McElhenney jumped on X to respond, writing, “Please tell me there’s another one coming?!?!??”. The film has earned a 91% score on Rotten Tomatoes and received glowing praise from critics as well.
Yet, for all its accolades, the movie faltered at the box office. It pulled in just $208.2 million worldwide against a $150 million budget, likely due to lackluster marketing and poor timing. The movie follows a ragtag team of heroes on a mission to steal a powerful, ancient relic, only to run into evil along the way. Even hardcore D&D fans gave a nod to its spot-on portrayal of the game’s mechanics and lore. And McElhenney is not the only one impressed by Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves—his Wrexham co-owner seems to be a fan too.
After the film’s release, Ryan Reynolds quickly teamed up with the Dungeons & Dragons directors for an exciting adventure of his own.

Ryan Reynolds is aligning forces with Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves directors Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley for an exhilarating action-adventure, Mayday. The screenplay has already been penned, emerging from an original pitch by Daley and Goldstein. Reynolds himself will lend his star power as both an actor and a producer through his Maximum Effort Productions. In June 2023, it was announced that Mayday was officially in development.

Last year, they wrapped the principal photography too. However, with Reynolds contemplating a temporary retreat from Hollywood, the project appears to be in a state of halt for now. Meanwhile, while he and Rob McElhenney navigate their own Netflix conundrum with Wrexham, at least one of their cherished endeavors is on the brink of becoming Netflix’s next big obsession in just a few weeks.
