“Rather stupid” – ‘The Crown’ Creator Peter Morgan Responds to Criticism Ahead of Season 6
Netflix has been ruffling feathers in the royal family with its shows for quite some time. Whether it was signing deals with those who stepped away from their royal fold or producing a contentious series like The Crown, the OTT giant surely has been stepping on the royal family’s toes with its content. Season five of the Peter Morgan-created series got the tag of being the most controversial season of the historical drama.
This not only caused a commotion within the royal family, but also rattled their supporters. Recently, the showrunner broke his silence on the torrent of criticism ahead of the sixth and final season.

Peter Morgan recently sat for an interview with Variety where he discussed the speculations regarding the final season of The Crown. He also expressed his opinion about all the criticism that his show, especially the fifth season, has been getting. In response to legendary actor Judi Dench and former UK Prime Minister John Major’s criticism, Morgan said that the minute his show airs, everyone will fall silent, feeling “rather stupid”.
He believed that these criticisms only surfaced in anticipation of the show. The filmmaker also shared how difficult it is to have an open “conversation about The Crown in the UK”. He believes that the British audience is still sensitive about the royal family, even if they deny it. When the interviewer asked Morgan if he read Prince Harry’s autobiography, Spare, the filmmaker, replied in the negative.
Though the 60-year-old got “sympathy” with Prince Harry, he did not want the Prince to influence his thinking. However, someone else from the royal family definitely went through the book, which did not take a good turn. Kate Middleton is very upset with Prince Harry’s revelations in the book, causing her to refuse any attempts at reconciliation.

The Princess of Wales is the unofficial peacemaker of the royal family, who has, time and again, gone out of her way to make amends between Prince William and Prince Harry. However, recently royal commentator Jenni Bond revealed that the 41-year-old has no plans of mediating between the Sussexes and the royals since she is very upset with the “brutal attacks” of Prince Harry. In the memoir, Prince Harry spilled the beans about their alleged poor treatment in the royal family.
He also shared how the Prince and Princess of Wales were hostile towards Meghan Markle, and the latter even made her cry during a fitting for Princess Charlotte’s bridesmaid dress. Prince Harry’s decision to publicly criticize the royal family “deeply hurt” Princess Catherine. This urged her and her husband to carry on with family life and work, without thinking about the Sussexes. It is yet to be seen how the upcoming season of The Crown will affect the Welsh royals, as Prince William already feels Netflix “ruthlessly exploited” the royal family.
