R-Rated 'Rebel Moon' Has an Uncanny Fall From Grace on Netflix, in the First Week of Release
Zack Snyder has long dominated Hollywood with his imaginative fantasy films, which continue to captivate audiences. However, his recent collaboration with Netflix has not been on par with the success of his earlier work outside the streaming platform. Despite Rebel Moon - Part One: A Child of Fire being Netflix's most expensive offering of 2023, Snyder's plan to develop it into a franchise has faced challenges. The newly released, uncut versions of Rebel Moon are experiencing difficulties similar to those of its edited predecessors.
Within its first week, the R-rated version has encountered an unprecedented setback, casting doubt on the success of Snyder's director’s cuts.

According to the latest update from What’s On Netflix, the R-rated films with extended runtimes, Rebel Moon - Chapter One: Chalice of Blood and Rebel Moon - Chapter Two: Curse of Forgiveness, failed to make the global Top 10 on Netflix after their opening weekend. From July 29th to August 4th, Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie led with 12.8 million views on its first three days, while The Marksman rounded out the list with 3.6 million views.
This indicates that both R-rated films garnered fewer than 3.6 million views each during their opening weekends, a sharp decline from the 23.9 million views the first movie received in December and the 21.4 million views for part 2 in April. While the extended runtimes of these versions made it challenging for them to secure a Top 10 spot, it is still a significant setback for Zack Snyder and his aspirations to build a Rebel Moon franchise.
Although securing spots on Netflix’s Top 10 has proven challenging, the reception of the R-rated versions appears more favorable according to another tracker.

Despite not making it into Netflix's Top 10 during their opening weekends, Zack Snyder’s R-rated films, Rebel Moon - Chapter One: Chalice of Blood and Rebel Moon - Chapter Two: Curse of Forgiveness, have shown some regional success. According to an analysis by FlixPatrol via What’s On Netflix, which tracks daily top 10s in most Netflix regions, Part One has appeared in the Top 10 in 41 countries.
Part Two, benefiting from a shorter runtime, has been featured in 56 countries, although generally towards the lower end of the charts. While this is a far cry from Netflix’s biggest hits, Snyder has plans for up to six Rebel Moon films, which could shift the narrative. Given that the marketing for these R-rated versions was relatively subdued compared to previous releases, there is still potential for the franchise to succeed in the future, as this experience could serve as a valuable lesson in shaping its path forward.
