Small Heath, Birmingham: black smoke from the factories and white from the multiple cigarettes. We see a neighborhood trapped in never-changing grey weather with a storm looming that could erupt any second. “On a gathering storm comes a tall handsome man in his dusty black coat with a red right hand.” One of the best setups that a show has seen, Peaky Blinders has a special place for all the right reasons. The wrap of the final season left a gangster-shaped hole in our lives. But fret not, for there is a special treat for all the Peaky Blinders fans and it is not the upcoming movie.

Peaky Blinders close the Commonwealth Games 2022

Birmingham played host to the 2022 Commonwealth Games. After 11 days of intense competitive spirit, the city brought down the curtains to the games last night. The dazzling closing ceremony commemorated the event with an impeccable line-up of performances, showcasing the who’s who of Birmingham, the West Midlands, to the world.

From heavy metal to reggae to pop, the closing night at the Alexander Stadium had it all. Artists, including but not limited to UB40, Musical Youth, Apache Indian, and many more, flaunted their skills on stage. There was even a surprise appearance by the legendary Ozzy Osbourne, the Prince of Darkness himself, who performed Black Sabbath’s Paranoid.

A massive chimney looming over the stage paid tribute to Birmingham’s industrial past. The city was actually dubbed as the “engine room of England.” Remind you of something? Fitting perfectly with the theme, the closing night also featured a sneak-peak of the Peaky Blinders stage show. Under the guidance of artistic director Benoit Swan Pouffer, the production performed a striking dance sequence from the play at the closing ceremony of the Commonwealth Games.

Creator Steven Knight wrote a special theater piece based on the beloved British show titled Peaky Blinders: The Redemption of Thomas Shelby. The full-fledged theater production is set to premiere on the 27th of September at the monumental Birmingham Hippodrome. Tommy Shelby once said, “There’s no rest for me in this world. Perhaps in the next.” Here’s hoping that he gets his redemption through this new world of the promising theater piece.
