Judd Apatow was taking notes as the film business tried to remain afloat in the early days of the pandemic. The cast and crew of the filmmaker’s new Netflix comedy The Bubble are stuck on the British set of Cliff Beasts 6, a farcical Hollywood blockbuster film in which the whole group is compelled to huddle together to avert an epidemic.
It doesn’t take many inspections to see parallels with the real-life situation that arose during the filming of Jurassic World Dominion in 2020. However, Apatow’s film is also a critique of its own conditions since it was shot during the epidemic and with the required limitations.
So while talking about how intimidating the bureaucracy of huge studios can get, Judd recalled his time while working at Fox Television in 2001.
He said that the whole experience of him while working at Fox was not fun, to say the least. Judd goes on to explain how everyone who was working at that time was mortified by their superiors. And were ready to do unethical things to keep their jobs.
“That culture came from the top. There was a cutthroat nature to it that dripped down to everybody. It wasn’t a happy group of fun, calm, people” says the director. Judd called the whole atmosphere “very toxic.”
