Just when the cinephiles thought Netflix was bending its rules for Greta Gerwig’s Narnia adaptation with a theatrical run, the streaming giant did it again for Gullermo del Toro’s Frankenstein. After landing some upsets with its strategy of averting theatrical releases, Gerwig’s dreams were finally realized with the streaming mogul stepping up for the unexpected. And now with Frankenstein approaching a similar method, it looks like Netflix is fanning the flames for its Oscar aspirations.
Although the curtain has barely lifted on this award season with the Academy Awards still in the pipeline, Netflix has already plotted its next grand act, and all eyes are on the upcoming Frankenstein.

In a recent conversation with Netflix’s chief content officer, Bela Bajaria, on Puck’s Matthew Belloni’s podcast, The Town, they touched upon the reasons the streaming monarch defies theatrical releases to concur what changed in the case of Greta Gerwig’s Narnia. As the conversation shifted to Frankenstein and if Guillermo del Toro’s vision will have a similar treatment, Bajaria added, speaking of him and Noah Baumbach, “They know that they’re going to get a bespoke qualifying run.”

Bajaria doubles down on her claims that Netflix is just the perfect outlet for filmmakers who want to make movies that reach more audiences. Narnia’s theatrical debut was only recently locked in, but with Frankenstein officially on the roster, Netflix seems to be gearing up for an Oscar run next year. To earn a shot at the golden statuette, a film must hit the theaters in six key metropolitan areas for a full seven-day stretch—a box the mogul appears ready to check.
While it is clear that not just the audiences but also the OTT Mogul has great expectations from Frankenstein, on what day does this much anticipated cinematic spectacle fall still remains a mystery.
When will Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein release on Netflix?
Around two weeks ago, Netflix unveiled a first-look image at Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein, revealing that the film will be released in November. The snap shows Oscar Isaac, who portrays the titular scientist, holding a vial in his hand. During the Next on Netflix event, del Toro appeared in a prerecorded message, unveiling exclusive footage while giving a tour of his Frankenstein-themed room in LA’s Bleak House.

“I’m a little obsessed with Frankenstein,” he admitted, surrounded by hundreds of themed figurine. He went on to reveal that he has been chasing this project to 20-25 years, emphasizing just how deeply personal it is to him—so much so that he considers the character his “autobiography.” The footage also teased a haunting moment, showing Jacob Elordi as Frankenstein’s monster, but knowing the director, it was not even the tip of the iceberg that will unveil in time to come.
