As the United States of America’s government probes into Chinese tech moguls operating on US soil like TikTok and Tencent, casualties surrounding the former social media platform were somewhat in the cards. However, according to CNN, the US declared Tencent a military company, inviting some far-reaching implications for the future of Netflix’s one of the biggest animated shows, Arcane. Arcane follows League of Legends, one of the IPs under the Tencent group.
The company may think it wise to withdraw its content from the US in the aftermath, meaning players will no longer have access to League of Legends in the country. Consequently, Netflix might have to pause developing any content from Tencent, including Arcane. The Pentagon’s latest move has put Tencent and CATL in the crosshairs, linking them to China’s military interests. Although the listing stops short of imposing sanctions, it may tarnish their brand and complicate their commercial pursuits in the American market.
While Arcane closed the curtains with its second and final season last November, the recent developments concern the upcoming spin-offs in the universe.
Netflix’s Arcane creators’ plans for spin-off
In a December report by The Direct conducted prior to the release of Arcane’s second season, co-creator Christian Linke revealed the plans for a potential third season. According to Linke, the creatives involved never considered a third installment expansion but branching with the franchise with more than one spin-off. The creators are reportedly more interested in the individual narratives of specific characters to pursue the spin-offs.

Fans were abuzz with theories and questions when Arcane announced its second season and a few did not stop even after the release. In his conversation, Linke even had a few characters in mind they would like to “continue their stories in their own kind of franchise.” Earlier, he mentioned the spin-offs were already in the works with the next series in development for about a year in a League of Legends creator’s stream. However, with the recent row of concerns, the future looks foggy for the Arcane spin-offs.
