Netflix’s Prince Harry Speaks of Playing the “Black Sheep” as ‘The Crown’ Shifts Focus to the Royal Brothers
The conclusive season of The Crown chronicled the final chapters of Queen Elizabeth’s 70 years of reign. The first segment focused on Princess Diana and her tragic demise. Meanwhile, the latter part shifted focus to the heirs of British monarchs, Prince William and Prince Harry. It was the time when the brothers were not only navigating the grief of their mother’s passing but were also grappling with increased attention from royal observers.
In a recent interview, Luther Ford shared his experience portraying Prince Harry in the Netflix royal drama. He also shed light on a particular scene where he delivered a monologue about being the “black sheep” in the royal family.

Luther Ford landed his breakthrough acting role in the final season of The Crown. The 23-year-old actor, who did not even expect a call-back after his audition, took on the role of the carefree and playful teen Prince Heartthrob- a character contrasting with Prince William’s serious and responsible nature. In one particular scene, Prince Harry delivered a monologue to Prince William, which was both exciting and scary, Ford told Rolling Stone.
As a newcomer without previous acting experience, he was not sure about how to successfully bring the scene to life on screen. However, with the support of the crew, “it felt achievable”. The actor then went on to give a shout-out to his dialect coaches who took him “through each beat”. Ford also shed light on the on-screen equation between Princess Diana’s two sons.
Peter Morgan aimed to showcase the unspoken bond between Prince Harry and Prince William in the show, despite their starkly contrasting personalities.

The final note of The Crown was years before Prince William and Prince Harry drifted apart in real life. However, this did not stop Peter Morgan from teasing early signs of tension between the brothers. A primary focus for the showrunner was to explore Prince Harry’s experiences following his mother’s death and the depth of his relationship with Prince William. As per Luther Ford, the brothers were the only people who understood what the other one was going through.
Peter Morgan wanted to showcase how one’s closest people end up hurting them. Morgan did not want to put words to this tension between the brothers. Instead, he wanted to convey “the things that aren’t being said”. While in real life the relationship between the brothers is beyond repair, the show served as a reminder of the heartwarming bond they used to share.
