Winning several Emmy Awards The Queen’s Gambit came out with flying colors, leaving an iconic impression globally. Set in the 1950s, the show became the top program in 63 countries within the first month of release. Directed by Scott Frank, the Netflix miniseries reflected on the life of an unparalleled talented orphan. Beth Harmon is a fictional chess prodigy who gradually became a star in the world of chess. Despite the fame and appreciation, this period drama received, it got caught in a defamation case.

The real-life chess player Nona Gaprindashvili sued the creators of the show for using some dialogue that was considered inappropriate. However, the case was finally wound up by the streamer but it came with a big price. What did this case cost? Let’s dive deeper to unravel the whole case.

Netflix has freed The Queen’s Gambit from the shackles of a defamation case

In a recent report scrolled out by The Hollywood Reporter, it is revealed that the defamation case of The Queen’s Gambit has come to end. The show appalled viewers with the final scene where Elizabeth aka Anya Taylor-Joy plays her legendary shot.

Meanwhile, in the background a commentator comments on the Georgian player saying: “The only unusual thing about her, really, is her sex. And even that’s not unique in Russia. There’s Nona Gaprindashvili, but she’s the female world champion and has never faced men.” 

Hearing this Nona felt betrayed by the downgrading comment on her career and talent. She called the statement false and condemned them for “being grossly sexist and belittling”. Moreover, she added that she has faced off against 59 men in her career.

The show won’t be coming back

In consideration of the words said about the player, U.S. District Judge Virginia A. Phillips explained that the show being fictional does not reduce the elements of defamation. Previously, the streamer tried to steer clear of the accusation saying this show is fiction.

Although we don’t know what deal Netflix has made with them, the executive producers have confirmed that there will be no season two. “I feel like we told the story we wanted to tell,” remarked Scott Frank and added that he now fears taking the show any further. Meanwhile, the show won’t come back and you will continue to see Taylor-Joy in other movies and shows.
