Amidst the ongoing teasers and rollouts of Netflix’s spring chapter, the streaming sensation has prescribed a genre-bending experience for the viewers. However, in a rare show of streaming power play, Netflix has just landed a rare pilot order for A Different World sequel series.

According to a new Deadline report, despite Netflix’s traditional insistence on straight-to-series orders, the streaming giant will film a pilot for A Different World, a sequel to the 1987 sitcom. This is reportedly the second pilot pickup at the streaming service that ordered the single-camera Little Sky after the WGA strikes hampered production. As per multiple sources, Netflix plans to shoot the pilot at the beginning of the summer to understand the tone and analyze the chemistry of the castmates. 

No cast members have been confirmed yet. An insider has revealed the streaming mogul does not plan to resort to conventional pilot seasons, in which the competition is for limited slots. Although Netflix has declined to comment, sources say A Different World’s sequel pilot order is a singular occurrence, not a deliberate change to their approach or trend. Besides the proof of concept for tone and cast chemistry, opting for the pilot model, generally in comedy, is to test the ground and fine-tune the comedic pacing.

Many Netflix comedies have set a benchmark for their streaming counterparts. However, A Different World’s rare pilot order makes one curious about what awaits the sequel series.

According to Deadline, Netflix’s A Different World sequel will follow Whitley Gilbert and Dwayne Wayne’s daughter, Deborah Wayne, who now attends an HBCU. The plot comes after the retooled second season, focusing on Whitley and Dwayne’s romance. It remains under wraps whether it would be Hillman College, but that was the initial idea. As per the reports, Deborah and the other college students’ casting is underway, with ages ranging from 18 to 20. 

The sequel was originally planned as a single-camera show, but it is unclear whether that has changed. However, Debbie Allen, who is directing from Felicia Pride’s script, is open to both formats. The pilot is slated to film this upcoming June in Atlanta. Executive producers on the show include Pride, Allen, Mandy Summers, Tom Werner, Gina Prince-Bythewood, and Reggie Bythewood.
