The world of comics is as vast as the endless possibilities it plays host to. Varied art styles coat a plethora of characters, each with its own distinct style and persona. It would hardly be wrong to state that managing to bring to life the pages of a comic book or even a manga is as hard as trying to walk with one’s eyes closed. Well, ideally because it is a blank canvas that has to carefully balance fan expectations while maintaining accuracy. Now, Netflix is marching ahead on this path with its adaptation of Scott Pilgrim Takes Off.

After tasting savory success recently with One Piece, the streaming giant is ready with its take on the popular graphic novel. And if the trailers are anything to go by, then surprises are in and plenty.

Netflix is in no mood to let go of the record-breaking streak it started with One Piece. In its quest to win over fans, the latest trailer for Scott Pilgrim Takes Off features an animation style in tune with the Bryan Lee O’Malley comics. Furthermore, the design of each scene feels to be ripped straight off the comics, much to fans’ delight. Finally, along with a soundtrack that deftly captures its in-universe style, the show is looking to replicate the feats of the likes of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

The trailer gives fans a glimpse of a comic-accurate Ramona Flowers. Then, with every second forward, anime tropes and video game references start popping up. The theme song itself is a remix of the original Mortal Kombat Theme song. Furthermore, the fighting styles as well, are a starring reflection of the video game. Finally, several scenes feature an anime-like transition and art style which has audiences hooked.

Scott Pilgrim Takes Off was already a star-studded live-action movie before having its animated take at the hands of the streaming giant. The 2010 movie, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, featured Michael Cera as the lead alongside Chris Evans, Brie Larson, and others. Interestingly, the streamer has roped in the entirety of the original cast back for its adaptation. Furthermore, Edgar Wright also returned to helm the outing, as did the original score-makers of the video game.

It does look like a page taken straight out of One Piece’s decision to have Eiichiro Oda in the driver’s seat. However, Netflix still plans to differ by making the version more comic-accurate, especially the age depiction of the characters. Finally, the fights will not be limited by live-action realism and will debut with full comic intensity on November 17.
