There have definitely been some slow months on Netflix in 2024, but things are about to get a lot more exciting. From Emily in Paris returning for a fourth season, and the Chucky franchise unleashing a new wave of murderous mayhem on the streaming giant, to getting the live-action adaptation of Holly Jackson’s mystery series, A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder, the end of summer has been a time of big changes for Netflix streamers.
As we move further into the year, Netflix is set to roll out even more content, with the upcoming addition being a heart-wrenching story, enough to have everyone weeping buckets.

The movie in question is His Three Daughters, written and directed by Azazel Jacobs. It first premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2023 and has recently found a streaming home on Netflix. After the film's debut last year, Netflix quickly picked up the worldwide distribution rights for $7 million. Now, Netflix has announced that the film will be available for streaming on September 20, 2024.
Before it hits Netflix, His Three Daughters will make its rounds in select theaters on September 6, 2024. The film stars Carrie Coon, Elizabeth Olsen, and Natasha Lyonne as the three bickering sisters. Also, the timing for the release is no accident. Netflix is preparing for the awards season, and His Three Daughters is now primed to be one of Netflix’s major awards contenders, along with some other worthy projects.
There is, however, one new rule that might mess with Netflix’s Oscar plans for the upcoming ceremony.

Netflix’s chances of winning the next Oscars are probably going to depend on Malcolm Washington’s The Piano Lesson, Jacques Audiard’s Emilia Pérez, and His Three Daughters. But a new Academy rule, that says that films need to run for a week in 10 of the top 50 US markets, could mess up Netflix’s plans. For post January 10, 2025 releases, distributors have to get their release plans approved by the Academy.
This new Oscars rule is a big change from the old one, which only required movies to play for one week in one of six qualifying cities. The old rule was great for streamers since they did not have to cover the costs of wider theatrical releases and could focus on streaming. Netflix has been benefiting from this for years as well. But with the new rule in place, it will be interesting to see if Netflix can still shine this awards season, after last year's disappointing performance, with critically acclaimed movies like His Three Daughters.
