Netflix began producing original animated content in-house in 2018. It did not take long for the streaming giant to hit upon a winning formula in just half a decade of diving into animation. Today, Netflix is recognized as the dark horse in animation, giving even the 100-year-old Walt Disney Animation Studios a run for their money. As France rolled out the red carpet for this year’s Annecy Film Festival, Netflix did not miss a beat in further, making its global animation dominance felt. 

The studio unveiled exclusive first looks at several animated projects set to find a home on the streaming platform this year.

The Annecy Film Festival showcased first looks at a selection of animated features, including Twilight of the Gods and Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl. Zack and Deborah Snyder reflected on the “amazing journey” they had while creating Twilight of the Gods, set to premiere on September 19th, as reported by Netflix. The movie was unveiled with a first look and an announcement video at the festival. Meanwhile, during a Next on Netflix showcase, Aardman debuted the first footage of the new Wallace & Gromit character, the smart gnome Norbot.

In addition to these highly anticipated projects, Netflix is preparing to debut Terminator Zero in August, a Lara Croft Tomb Raider series in October, and the final season of Arcane in November, along with 30 new animation projects. There are also plans for director’s cut editions of Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon series later this year, which raises questions about whether it can redeem the franchise after its first two installments.

Reflecting the general consensus, the director’s cut of Rebel Moon may just prove to be Snyder’s boldest move yet.

Both Rebel Moon movies were heavily hyped before their release. However, they fell flat, with the second installment in particular deemed disastrous by fans. Some even began placing the movies in the 'so bad it is good' category. Following such an underwhelming reception, giving Zack Snyder’s now-infamous director’s cut treatment to both films might be the filmmaker's most radical choice yet.

These director’s cut versions will not only include deleted scenes but also reportedly add an hour or more to each film's runtime, offering additional scenes and context. This could either completely discredit the franchise or entirely alter the fan experience. Fortunately, Netflix has a wealth of other animated projects this year to rely on to deal with one potential setback.
