As important sections of the entertainment industry shut down, Netflix adds fuel to the fire. The OTT platform has expanded enormously, especially in the last few years. From buying licenses to making their own movies and series, the platform and its competitors have captured the television and movie theatre era. This would not have been possible without the creative workforce of actors and writers.

Now changing times bring change in technology. Wild progression is welcomed, risking the jobs of thousands of people trying to make a living. This is exactly what the strike members are against. But amidst their solidarity, Netflix has made a move in its interest, heading towards AI.

As people affected by the strike protest, Netflix is on a hunt for an AI product manager. According to the Netflix website, they are actually offering a salary of $9,00,000 to a single employee annually for it. The offer has not been received very well by supporters of the strike, especially Rob Delaney. As per him, “that amount of earnings could qualify thirty-five actors and their families for SAG-AFTRA health insurance.” Supporters are upset about how the money is going towards AI instead. The American comedian actually compared it to an episode of the series Black Mirror.

As SAG-AFTRA and WGA join hands after 60 years for a common cause, production companies fight back, saying they do not have enough money to comply. But as per Delaney, there is enough money in Hollywood to look after all. Although it is still in its early stages, it is capable of using human scans for recreation without having to pay for them every time. One can also learn the usage of chat GPT through commands instead of using writers.

In the past few months, people saw singers like Kanye West and Drake sing each others’ songs, thanks to AI. Background actors are being paid $200-300 dollars an hour to make different expressions which will be used indefinitely through AI.

Companies like Disney have kept their silence over their investments in AI. Netflix’s own show Deep Fake Love showed how AI uses scans to create ‘deep fake.’ Days are passing by as strike members look hope for a solution while production companies continue to march towards artificial intelligence.
