There was a time when Katharine Hepburn was met with back-to-back flops, giving her the title of “box-office poison.” By the 1930s, Hepburn starred in a couple of movies that were critically acclaimed flops. The films were not a success as she opted for oddball roles, where the female protagonist was educated and independent. This was a different norm for women back in that time. Writer Graham Greene applauded her for her performance in Break of Hearts but also explained why the audience, especially men, were fearful of her. “Miss Hepburn always makes her young women quite horrifyingly lifelike with their girlish intuitions, their intensity, their ideals which destroy the edge of human pleasure, “ he explained, as mentioned by Slash Film.
Disheartened, she went back to Broadway and starred in a play, The Philadelphia Story, which gave her so much fame. Happily, she purchased the film rights and made a solid entry back to Hollywood, that too on her own terms. Ever since then, there was no looking back for her and she gave one hit after the other.
