Netflix Is About to Drop Two Iconic Franchises Into Its Lineup on September 1st

Netflix currently boasts one of the biggest repositories of content in streaming. And it is not surprising considering the kind of investment the streaming giant has poured into licensing some of the best shows and films in recent years. The company has shelled out billions to secure hit shows like Grey’s Anatomy, How I Met Your Mother, and Seinfeld, while also dropping hundreds of millions just to keep the popular sitcom Friends on the platform. And now, as 2024 approaches its end, the OTT service provider is adding even more gems to its collection.

Netflix is adding two classic franchises right from the start of September, which might also help fill the gap left by the absence of originals.

Netflix has come to realize that spending $100-200 million on films, exclusively for its crowded streaming platform, is not as financially sound in the long run. And hence, it has shifted its focus from churning out original content to licensing third-party content. After adding Rebel Moon, Chucky, and several other franchises in August, Netflix is bringing in one cult classic action movie, starring Sylvester Stallone and one thriller, featuring a star-studded ensemble, to its collection next month- The Expendables and Jawsas per What's On Netflix

This is just one of the many acclaimed projects Netflix is adding to its library as summer winds down. Along with the flood of licensed hit shows up for grabs, Netflix has also announced its plans to spend the bulk of its $17 billion content budget this year on creating its own exclusive material. However, there are a few challenges the streamer must dodge to keep its momentum going strong.

True to its form, Netflix is constantly bombarded with grievances from fans, and a recent study just revealed exactly what streamers are expecting from the service provider.

Netflix has been leaning heavily on adaptations lately. However, it often seems like the streamer struggles to do justice to the original sources whenever it tries to adapt something. The issue lies in the inaccuracies that Netflix often introduces into these adapted projects. Recently, a UCLA study on American youth showed that Gen Z is not interested in adaptations, franchises, or remakes anymore.

Out of the 15,000 people surveyed, 56% preferred to watch original stories. The study also pointed out that Gen Z is not drawn to unnecessary nudity. This was also one of the reasons Jennifer Lawrence’s No Hard Feelings on Netflix faced criticism. With many unfinished original franchises awaiting their next installments and new ones on the horizon, Netflix is surely not just relying on licensing iconic classics.
