Netflix’s ‘iHostage’: The Shocking True Story Behind the Twisted Thriller

It is officially the rainy season on Netflix, and viewers must be stocked with an umbrella, if not two, to tackle the wind speed of content refreshers. After a spring break of streaming milestones, the OTT platform has pulled up its socks once again to ensure the train of binge never stops. And to keep viewers on the edge of their seats, Netflix just brought iHostage to its streaming library. 

While Netflix already gave spectators a golden scoop of thrillers to get through the streaming season, iHostage just shook things up by a notch with a surprising true story hidden behind the film.

According to Tudum, iHostage on Netflix is a heart-pounding thriller that follows a Bulgarian man’s desperate fight for survival during a 2022 Amsterdam Apple Store hostage crisis. The film masterfully weaves together the perspectives of the armed assailant, the terrified hostages, and the brave first responders, delivering a tense and emotional exploration of courage, resilience, and the human cost of terror.

For those unversed, on February 22, 2022, a 27-year-old armed man entered the Apple Store in Leidseplein, Amsterdam, and held a customer hostage at gunpoint for almost five hours. The assailant’s demands were steep: $260 million in cryptocurrency and a guaranteed escape from the building. However, his plans ultimately unraveled. According to iHostage’s director, speaking with TIME, Bobby Boermans used to live near the store when the dreadful event unfolded.

Though Bobby Boermans said such incidents are scarce in the Netherlands, the scars of the night and the lingering questions led to the materialization of iHostage on Netflix. That said, who is in the cast of iHostage?

Netflix took viewers on quite a gripping streak with its content expansion through spring. However, Bobby Boermans’ iHostage has gained traction for multiple reasons. The film recently hit the Netflix shelves on April 18 and boasts a star-studded cast. According to Tudum, iHostage’s ensemble includes Admir Šehović, Soufiane Moussouli, Loes Haverkort, Marcel Hensema, and Emmanuel Ohene Boafo.

Fockeline Ouwerkerk, Matteo van der Grijn, Thijs Boermans, Eric Corton, Roosmarijn van der Hoek, Robin Boissevain, Jolanda van den Berg, Everon Jackson Hooi, Ahlmaam Teghadouini, Louis Talpe, and Zahra Lfil round out the cast. Sabine Brian, Boudewijn Rosenmuller, and Diederik van Rooijen produced the film under the banner of the Horizon Film production company, and Simon de Waal wrote the script.
