Netflix Finds Its Frontrunners in Ali Wong and Steven Yeun From ‘Beef’ at the Emmy 2023
The Emmy Award nominations come to us at a low time owing to the writer’s strike. Not to mention the impending actor’s protest that could cause a crack in the glass for upcoming projects. In the midst of this kerfuffle, the Emmy nominations announcement has come bearing good news as fans are nodding in approval with every entity that gets added. But one underdog nomination that got more than a nod was the Lee Sung Jin Netflix directorial, Beef.
Netflix caused quite a stir with its decision to pitch the series as an anthology or limited series to Emmy. Especially because the gold lay in its dark comedy. But while it is unclear if the change of category worked, the series has proved to be an Emmy nomination magnet for the streamer in other categories.

Lee Sung Jin’s directorial released to a quiet start on Netflix in April. Given that Lee had only a few projects to his credit, this was not unexpected. But barring all odds, Beef went on to prove to be a work of art and scored a 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. It is undeniable, however, that it was its performers that truly sealed the deal. And Emmy has proved to be among the first to recognize it as it nominated both the leads, Ali Wong and Steven Yeun.
Steven Yeun is nominated as the Best Actor in a Limited Series or Movie category. Similarly, Ali Wong is nominated for the Best Actress in a Limited Series or Movie category.
The audience will definitely have its eye on both categories as the other nominees stem from the cast of Wednesday, Abbott Elementary, and more exceptional performances. However, Ali Wong and Steven Yeun’s Emmy nomination falls in a different league than the others.

There is not a hint of doubt that an Emmy nomination is a badge of honor for every nominee. However, for the Asian community, which has had only eight nominees in 75 long years of Emmy, the pride and honor is unpalpable. Especially for Ali Wong and Steven Yeun, who just took the count to a double-digit.
2023 is definitely a year to remember for the community after Everything Everywhere All At Once mirrored its title and picked every accolade everywhere all at once during the award season. If Steven Yeun makes the cut this year, it will mark the second time that an actor of Korean descent has won in the Best Actor category at Emmy. For Ali Wong, she may just become the second-ever Asian woman after Archie Panjabi to bring home an Emmy. Moreover, if the series ends up winning, then the sky is the limit for Beef.
