Netflix is gleefully over the seas right now! The streaming giant achieved widespread acclaim and success with its live-action adaptation of One Piece. Notably, the breakthrough came after a string of failures at cracking the live-action world. However, it managed to get things right this time and is rightfully rejoicing in the success. Netflix Co-CEO Greg Peters had nothing but praise for the show and Netflix, as he highlighted the many wins the company marked with it.

Since its launch on 31st August this year, One Piece has become a chart-topping success and a global phenomenon. As such, the co-chief highlights what it took to get the show up to where it is now.

The Straw Hat Pirates have sailed to be a record-breaking phenomenon for Netflix, as they currently sit at number one in 93 countries. Additionally, this feat far outpaces Netflix’s own Stranger Things and Wednesday’s tied number one in 84 countries. As Deadline reported, Greg Peters opened up at the Goldman Sachs Communacopia & Technology Conference, about how the different creative teams of Netflix in the United States and Japan collaborated to ensure the smooth adaptation of Eiichiro Oda’s beloved manga and anime. He also admitted that bringing over an expansive manga and anime like One Piece, with a loyal fan base itself, was “a very high bar to meet.”

The Netflix executive also highlighted that it was “amazing” to see the show “be massively popular and a success around the world.” Peters also spoke of the show being so well-made that “haters” have tried and failed to even point a finger at the show’s flaws. He touched upon the show’s global appeal that far outreaches the country of its origin. A similar feat was achieved by Netflix with Squid Game when it transcended barriers and borders and broke multiple records.

After faltering with anime and manga live actions like Cowboy Bebop, Netflix has finally managed to course-correct itself. All thanks to one major decision taken by the streamer.

Onboarding Eiichiro Oda as an executive producer made Netflix hit the jackpot

When Netflix announced the live-action adaptation of One Piece, back in 2017, it was greeted with apprehensions. Fans around the world were worried about Netflix ruining the charm of the popular manga and anime. However, come 2023, Netflix has proved all of them wrong. A major factor that worked for the streaming giant is having the original manga creator, Eiichiro Oda, as an executive producer and creative consultant. Oda ensured that the changes he made to the show never went beyond the charm of the manga he had created. Additionally, he made sure that the characters followed and stayed true to their origins.

Additionally, the cast of One Piece delivered spot-on performances that perfectly captured the spirit of Monkey D. Luffy and his group of pirates. Finally, Netflix also ensured that the visual effects lived up to the mood of the story. All of these, overseen by the creative wisdom of Eiichiro Oda, brought resounding success to One Piece.
