The millennial summer nostalgia is a real thing. Every year, right around this time, we are hit with pangs of childhood memories, school breaks, popsicles, and basically, simpler times- when the world existed without being tethered to mobile and social technology. And there is no better way to tap into that deep-seated longing for the past than to indulge in some classic cinema from the good old days. Luckily, Netflix, the streaming giant, is here to deliver just what is needed.

Netflix is adding a critically acclaimed coming-of-age drama to its library, which is sure to have the viewers reliving their childhood.

The movie in question is Stand By Me, a 1986 drama based on Stephen King's 1982 novella, The Body. It is a perfect watch to instill a sense of nostalgia for childhood friendships, whether one has lived through that era or not. Not only is this one of the best adaptations of a Stephen King story, but Rob Reiner also deserves kudos for featuring arguably the best quartet of child actors ever assembled. And Netflix will kick off September by streaming this classic right from the start of the month.

Stand By Me was nominated for an Academy Award and for two Golden Globe Awards. It has since been considered one of the greatest films of all time. Not only does it have the power to bring back memories of when childhood friends were the center of the universe but also perfectly captures the innocence, loyalty, and love of the young actors. But Stand By Me is not the only gem Netflix is adding this September.

His Three Daughters, written and directed by Azazel Jacobs, will also be making its streaming debut on Netflix this year. The Carrie Coon, Elizabeth Olsen, and Natasha Lyonne starrer was first premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2023. Right after its big screen debut, Netflix quickly grabbed the global distribution rights of the film for $7 million. And now the streamer is about to make the film available on its platform starting September 20, 2024.

It is also being said that His Three Daughters could be a major contender for Netflix at the 2025 Oscars, along with Malcolm Washington’s The Piano Lesson and Jacques Audiard’s Emilia Pérez. After a bit of a flop at the 2024 Academy Awards, Netflix is seizing every opportunity to attract viewers to its platform. And adding films like Stand By Me might just do the trick.
