The Emmy nominations have been taken over by OTT platforms, with Netflix as one of the top contenders. It does not come as a surprise considering how they have expanded with different genres. Some of the biggest names in Hollywood have penetrated the platform to take small-screen entertainment to another level. Now the platform may be one of the first ones to grow, but the competition has been fierce.

The 75th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards will be held in North Hollywood, C.A. with stars dazzling and waving while hoping to grab an award. But it is really the battle of OTTs to see who dominated the recent months better, at least nomination-wise.

Big sets, creative stories, remakes, cheaper accessibility, and big budgets have led to the expansion of OTT platforms. The pandemic proved to be a time of boon to convert many viewers from traditional television to online entertainment. Netflix was one of the first ones to start taking the lead, but others paced up as well. According to DiscussingFilms, the Los Gatos-based platform won more nominations than Amazon, Disney+, and Apple TV+ combined with 103 nominations. However, they got beaten by HBO with 127 nominations.

Apple Tv+ has 46 nominations, while Hulu and Prime Video shared an equal number of 42, and Disney+ is at the bottom of the list with 40 mentions. At this point, every platform has a handful of shows that are trending globally, be it Dahmer—Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story and Beef by Netflix, Succession by HBO, or Ted Lasso by Apple TV+. Netflix certainly had a lot of shows that created a buzz in comparison to HBO, but the latter’s nomination shows its ability to impress with lesser quantity.

Netflix has The Crown while HBO has Succession, both series that the public has an eye on, although the latter leads with numbers. The Best Drama Series category has some tough competition with Andor, Better Call Saul, The Crown, House of the Dragon, The Last of Us, Succession, The White Lotus, and Yellowjackets.

It is to be noted that this award ceremony could be one of the last ones before the SAG-AFTRA goes on a strike, joining WGA against the contracts made, for less pay and poor treatment. This means an added importance to this year’s wins.
