Netflix Announces ‘Spy Kids’ Reboot For Present Generation With Robert Rodriguez on the Film Series’ 21st Anniversary
Before we had an abundance of Marvel or DC movies, we used to have Spy Kids with its cool gadgets. To this date, we still miss Carmen and Juni Cortez, with super spy parents and grandparents. The original film developed around the siblings, who discover their parents are super spies, and now have to rescue them after being kidnapped. The film was an enormous hit after its release in 2001.
Obviously, more movies followed the original, including, 2002’s Spy Kids 2: The Island of Lost Dreams, 2003’s Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over, and 2011’s Spy Kids: All the Time In The World. Netflix too jumped in the bandwagon with its 2016 computer-animated series, Spy Kids: Mission Critical, which ran for two seasons. However, nothing quite stood up to the beauty that the OG movie was. Perhaps, that’s why, after 21 years since the first movie’s release, Netflix is about to relaunch Spy Kids with the original director Robert Rodriguez in the director’s chair.

Robert Rodriguez is reimagining Spy Kids
Robert Rodriguez created the Spy Kids franchise, and thus, it’s no surprise that Netflix roped in the director for this project. This is the streamer’s efforts to focus on more family projects like its latest hit, The Adam Project. So, on March 30th, 2022, Netflix announced on Twitter that Rodriquez will write, direct, and produce the film.
The original film involved Antonio Banderas and Carla Gugino as the parents, and Alexa PenaVega and Daryl Sabara, as the siblings. But these actors will likely not be a part of the new movie, as the tweet revealed Rodriguez is reimagining the Spy Kids world for a new generation. Thus, the new movie is probably not a sequel to the original film.

Since this announcement is barely a day old, we don’t yet know what the story of the new film will be. Unsurprisingly, we don’t know the cast and release date either. We can, however, such updates in the coming months.
This is not Robert Rodriguez‘s first venture with Netflix. The director worked with the streamer on 2020’s We Can Be Heroes, the sequel of which is currently in its development stage.
