Netflix will soon be gracing our screens with an exciting crime thriller drama, Griselda. The upcoming series will star ABC’s long-running sitcom, Modern Family, with Sofia Vergara as the lead character. Vergara will portray Griselda Blanco, and it seems like the actress is all set to take up the new challenge. A while ago, Netflix shared the first look of the series’ poster, giving the fans a glimpse of Vergara’s Griselda Blanco.

Interestingly, the streamer even shared a peculiar description of the character, calling her “the Godmother of the underworld.” The poster even featured an iconic tagline for Griselda as it read, “A woman of substance.” Interestingly, the character Vergara will play in the series will be miles apart from her portrayal of an eccentric Gloria Pritchard in Modern Family. Meanwhile, Griselda will be the second crime drama on Netflix that draws inspiration from real-life events after Jeffrey Dahmer.

What will the upcoming crime series on Netflix be about?

Griselda follows the life of Griselda Blanco, an ambitious and renowned name in the Colombian underworld. The limited series on Netflix will cover the journey of one of the biggest drug cartels in the US. Blanco even earned herself the nickname ‘Cocaine Godmother’ and ‘The Black Widow’ back in the day. Apparently, she oversaw a massive drug syndicate in Miami, California, New York, and Columbia.

Griselda’s story is indeed a gripping one. Apart from being hugely influential, her drug syndicate saw an income of nearly $80 million monthly. She finally got arrested in 1985 and served almost 20 years in the prison. Eight years later, the Cocaine Godmother met her ultimate fate as she lost her life during a drive-by assassination. The series is all set to release early next year in January 2024.
