Buckingham Palace was never very welcoming to Meghan Markle, as we now know. Although the senior royals could not warm up to her, she found a friend in Princess Eugenie, the younger cousin of Prince Harry and Prince William. Their bond remained unaffected even when the couple made their famous exit from the palace.

The six-part documentary on Netflix is a testimony to their friendship remaining strong until now. Royal fans were convinced that Eugenie was on Markle’s side. However, her recent Instagram post about Kate Middleton raised questions about her loyalty. And now Harry, in his memoir Spare, shed light on their first meeting and dynamic and his brother’s reaction to his wife. 

Meghan Markle had food poisoning when she first met Princess Eugenie

Princess Eugenie and her husband James Brooksbank are one of the few royal family members that have remained close with the Sussexes since their exit. In fact, her cousin was the very first royal member to meet Meghan Markle. When Prince Harry introduced her to his cousin, he claimed it was a success as the two girls got along immediately, as if they were sisters. 

However, it turned a bit awkward when the mother of two had to excuse herself to rush to the bathroom. She apparently threw up her lunch and was suspected to have food poisoning. The Suits alum had squid for her lunch at a restaurant and her body just did not like it as much to digest it.

“If meeting the rest of my family goes like this, we’re home free,” the redhead prince joked. However, it did not go as expected with his brother. Prince William instead recoiled and freaked out when he first met her then-girlfriend. Markle had leaned in to give him a hug instead of a curtsey, which was the protocol for meeting the royal family members for the first time. Not entirely the fault of Markle because Harry had forgotten to tell her that. But he did remember it when he introduced her to King Charles.
