All eyes are on Stranger Things 5 at the moment. The final season of the sci-fi show is currently in the womb of production. And just recently, some of the first looks of characters from the final season surfaced in the public eye as the Duffer Brothers celebrated their 40th birthday– whether accidentally or intentionally is still up for debate. Among the unveiled looks was that of Maya Hawke, famed for playing Robin Buckley. As the directors sliced their birthday cake, Hawke stood nearby, watching the joyous celebration.

Hawke was seen wearing 90s-style straight jeans, along with a white graphic tee and a leather jacket. While fans have seen Robin in her usual masculine edge and grungy aesthetics before, this look, in particular, reminded them of the original goth queen of the 90s. Winona Ryder, back in her days, was one of the trendiest and coolest girls in the industry. Not only for her roles as outcasts like freaks, geeks, and rejects, but also for her unconventional menswear-inspired fashion.

The outfit in question seemed to be drawing inspiration from an iconic Winona Ryder ensemble. The Little Women actress made this combination of a vintage “Tom Waits” band tee, a studded leather jacket with lapels, and light-wash mom jeans popular in the 90s. She wore this ensemble for the first time at the premiere of The Commitments in 1991. The 52-year-old wore the same T-shirt again after years, at the press junket for Destination Wedding in 2018.

As soon as the behind-the-scenes picture from Stranger Things surfaced, fans could not help but notice the similarities between the on-screen character of Maya Hawke and the real Winona Ryder.

Robin Buckley barely interacts with Joyce Byers, Winona Ryder’s character in Stranger Things, throughout the series. However, her aesthetics could have been secretly drawing from the 90’s grunge icon. Fans shared the same sentiment upon seeing the comparison between the two. One fan went as far as claiming that if Stranger Things had been made thirty years ago, no one could have portrayed Robin better than Winona Ryder.

A fan also recalled the scene where Robin finds a picture of young Joyce Byers and goes “OMG she looks like Winona Ryder, she’s so hot!”

Fans could not agree more with the fact that both the Stranger Things stars have mastered the gothic aesthetics.

Apart from Maya Hawke, fans also got a glimpse of Noah Schnapp and David Harbour in the viral pictures from Duffer Brothers’ birthday bash. All these snippets are pointing to the fact that Stranger Things season 5 is not too far away from the fandom!
