In an era that is defined by high-speed Internet and thousands of hours of media consumption, content streamers are in a constant push of one-upping the other. The effervescent leading faces of Disney+ and Netflix have had much of a tug-of-war between them. However, upon a closer look, it is the latter that has been taking much of the dominance over the others. Leading in reforms and with Disney following suit, the war between the two is as similar as pronounced.

Inclining to mark a thaw in his company’s slumping profits has the Disney CEO aiming for its rival but with a hand of cooperation.

Disney and Netflix talk about collaboration and content sharing

The year 2023 saw Bob Iger return to helm Walt Disney amid declining interest and revenue. Marred by poor reception and criticisms of its tentpole franchises like Marvel, the boss looks to turn to an unlikely collaborator. As reported by Deadline, the Disney chief talked about the potential licensing of content to Netflix during the Q4 investor call. However, Iger made it clear that the company’s “core brands” – “Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars,” will continue to air under Disney+.

Unlike Netflix, Disney has a very fragmented streaming business spread over Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+. Moreover, the CEO also admitted that the House of Mouse has “actually been licensing content to Netflix.” The rationale behind the move is to showcase the company’s streaming prowess while also reducing the load on itself to focus on delivering quality content. The reports come after Iger’s previous call to push for “quality over quantity” and cost-cutting measures.

The added volume of content will further bolster Netflix’s position of dominance, as Disney is not the only one hopping over.

Zack Snyder, along with his DC productions, is moving over to Netflix

After DC Studios showed the popular director the door, Netflix swiftly swooped in to add Zack Snyder to its arsenal. The James Gunn and Peter Safran-led company opted for a complete overhaul of the Man of Steel director’s vision and erased all his movies from canon. Interestingly, all the flicks starting with Henry Cavill’s outing until Gunn’s reboot are coming to Netflix. Barring, Aquaman, Shazam! And the Flash, even Gunn’s own The Suicide Squad, is part of the migration.

The move comes in tandem with Snyder gearing up his Rebel Moon franchise for the streamer. The ‘mature’ take on Star Wars will also merge his Army of the Dead franchise with itself, birthing a vast universe of Snyder content. Thus, the incoming barrage of content is here to pitch Netflix as the leading streamer to date.
