Fonda and Lily didn’t really have any acting experience prior to Grace and Frankie but their Emmy-nominated performances were more than commendable. Which according to Kauffman, added an extra triumph to the show and made it popular among all generations and genders.
Marta said that they faced the same bias with FRIENDS. Back then, the question was: Who would watch a show with a bunch of 20-year-olds? Despite of that, she pushed the boundaries of the bias. And both the shows received world-wide acclaim and love.
Talking about it, Marta said, “My theory is, if you have characters that you want to spend time with, that you care about, characters who you’re invested in, then people will watch.” She went on to say how people don’t watch Grace and Frankie because there are two old women in it, they watch it because they find comfort in it. And it makes them feel good.
