Maid’s Creator, Molly Smith Metzler, Signs a Multi-Year Deal With Netflix

Molly Smith Metzler’s Netflix drama series Maid is a fan-favorite. And now we’ve arrived with some wonderful news for Molly Smith Metzler’s fans: she’s expanding her Netflix partnership. Metzler has agreed to a multi-year overall deal with Netflix wherein she will develop and produce new series and other projects. She plans to make more socially conscious originals with strong female characters on both sides of the camera.

“From day one, my collaboration with the entire Netflix team has been open, creative and wildly supportive. I’m honored to call Netflix my home and very excited to keep this party going!”, Metzler said. The news came after Netflix’s hit show Maid, produced by Warner Bros. Television, continued to perform strongly.

Maid has received many accolades this year

According to Netflix, Maid is still in the top ten, with 469 million hours viewed in its first 28 days. The show received 15 award nominations, including SAG, Critics Choice, and Writers Guild, and is one of AFI’s Television Programs of the Year.

Written by Metzler and based on Stephanie Land’s bestselling memoir Maid: Hard Work, Low Pay and a Mother’s Will to Survive. The series centers on Alex, played by Margaret Qualley, a single mother who turns to housekeeping to make ends meet as she battles poverty, homelessness, and bureaucracy.

A Juilliard School graduate, Metzler is the award-winning playwright of Cry it Out and Elemeno Pea, among others. In 2018, she won the Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Playwrighting and the ATCA/Steinberg New Play Citation.

Prior to Maid, Metzler was a writer-producer on Showtime’s Shameless and writer on Netflix’s Lionsgate produced Orange is the New Black. Metzler has written feature scripts for Universal, Disney, and Fox 2000, among others. She is currently working on a new play for the Kennedy Center and the Manhattan Theatre Club.
