Like Father, Like Son! How Jaden Smith Is Bringing Back the Iconic Will Smith Sunflower Outfit From ‘The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air’
Jaden Smith took his first step into the industry alongside his father, Will Smith, in The Pursuit of Happyness. The movie not only became one of the greatest hits in Will Smith’s three-decade-long career but also his son’s. The rapper was six years old then and was remarkable in his performance as a supporting son to his father. It looks like not much has changed as even now, the 24-year-old Jaden Smith continues to support his father.
This time he has done so through his own fashion collection. The all-rounder is always up to date with the latest trends and is also the founder of many. Considering his wise words regarding fashion, spectators were left quite confused as to why he would walk out in a black sunflower headpiece at Stella McCartney’s runway show at Paris Fashion Week.
In a chat with Footwear News, Smith shared light on the reason, saying, “I thought back to an episode of the ‘Fresh Prince’, where something happens that my dad has to dress up like a sunflower. The episode was super embarrassing for him. But I was like this is an amazing idea of how to turn someone into a flower.”

The scene Jaden mentioned was portrayed in the 24th episode titled The Six Degrees of Graduation of the third season. Will Smith had to be a sunflower and dance with toddlers to receive a passing grade, to be more precise.
Almost three decades later, times have changed, and this Smith is not wearing a sunflower headpiece to pass his grade, but to pass the fashion checks.
Jaden Smith shared his ideology in fashion
Smith, with his hit song Gettin’ Jiggy Wit It in the 90s, was not only a popular figure in the music industry but also in acting. Smith sported some of the best looks on red carpets and shows during the 90s and his son is no different. However, fashion means something more to the 24-year-old actor. Instead of reducing it to something we can look good in, he believes it can be a representation of what we are on the inside.

“I wanted to make people into plants, to turn people into flowers. Being part of nature is the highest level of consciousness,” the American rapper added. Jaden Smith’s latest fashion outing is a testimony to his ideology of infusing nature into fashion. While doing so, he paid homage to his father’s iconic look from the 90s.
