King Charles and Queen Camilla Kick-Start Easter With Their First Ever Royal Maundy Service

King Charles and Queen Camilla have never been any busier than they have been in the last few months. The monarch soon ascended to the throne right after Queen Elizabeth’s sad demise in September last year. Ever since, the King along with his wife has taken on the royal duties onto his shoulders. After their first ever Royal debut overseas in Germany, the royal pair has now continued its obligations towards the monarchy by carrying forward the native traditions, like the Maundy Service.

It’s Easter time and as a matter of course, the English landed aristocracy will not be missing out on the same. Despite the royal rota, King Charles and Queen Camilla have got their schedule lined up for royal engagements and public appearances. Owing to the Easter weekend, the royal pair graced the Royal Maundy Service at York Minster.

As is the custom, the previous monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, used to distribute special coins called the “Maundy Money.” This was in respect to acknowledging those over the age of 70. It is to those who have pledged their outstanding support to Christianity and its communities. The Very Reverend Dominic Barrington and The Most Reverend and Right Honorable Stephen Cottrell, Archbishop of York, welcomed Their Majesties for the service. Queen Camilla was greeted by a beautiful yet traditional nosegay bouquet.

What is the Maundy Service all about? 

As reported by the royal family website, Maundy Thursdays mark n auspicious day for Christians. The Monarch distributes special Maundy money to local pensioners. This was in order to have more of service stories like Jesus washing the feet of the Apostles at the Last Sup.

Paying an ode to both their ages, they gave away the maundy money to thank the 74 women and 75 Men. It is apparently a way of expressing gratitude for their community contributions. The same group of people is selected from distant lands. Starting from Texas and Angelica, various different churches for the Monarchy. Taking to their official Instagram handle, York Minster expressed that it was much of a blessing and opportunity.

Nonetheless, rendering the tradition, beneficiaries received two purses. The white purse had two specially minted coins. The equivalent to King Charles’ age of 74, is all white with specially minted coins. Meanwhile, the red contains two commemorative coins, a tribute to the monarch’s traditional gift of food and clothing. The number 75 seeks to have upheld a special meaning for the monarchy as a whole. It marks The King’s upcoming 75th birthday and also the 75th anniversary of the Wildrush generation.
