John Wick Director Chad Stahelski, Delves Into ‘Highlander’ Future With Henry Cavill, Why It Is Taking So Long, and Differences Between That and the Keanu Reeves Franchise
Chad Stahelski delivered action like never before with the John Wick franchise. Not only that but the franchise breathed life into Keanu Reeves’ career and gave him a second chance. However, Stalhelski never quite stepped out of the franchise until he announced his other project, Highlander. If you were born in the 80s you’d remember the franchise was as popular as Star Wars but didn’t reinvent itself to stay popular. But now Stahelski hopes to take a stab at the series with Henry Cavill in the lead. In a recent interview, the director revealed why it is taking so long for the project to get underway.
Highlander was a popular franchise released in 1986 and starring Christopher Lambert in the lead. The original spawned seven seasons of television programs and five films. It even inspired two spin-offs. And Stahelski is feeling the pressure of handling a series that already has a history and a solid fan base. He wants to get things absolutely right.

John Wick was not a franchise with countless offshoots and series. Stahelski had the time to learn through the process and shape the franchise as he saw fit. However, that is not the case with Highlander. “With Wick, you weren’t serving seven seasons of TV plus two spinoffs plus five films,” Stahelski explained during a recent Deadline interview.
Highlander has a lot of mythology involved in the narrative. And it is a challenge to cramp all the narrative and flashbacks into a two-hour movie. A TV format would have better suited the franchise since the story could take time to build over the seasons.
“It’s trickier when you’re trying to do something with that big of a mythology,” he added, but thankfully, in Cavill, the John Wick director has an actor with enough caliber to handle a vast franchise.

Henry Cavill is the best choice for Highlander
The British star fits the role to the T considering his physicality. Additionally, the role involves a lot of action and we have already seen that he is capable of pulling off intricate action scenes as well.
The story involves a lead, who is immortal and has lived 500 years. Henry Cavill already has a brush with immortality and mythology in Netflix’s The Witcher. And just like Stahelski, he won’t mind taking his sweet time to develop the series since he is a big fan of the original.
