The Power of the Dog created quite a buzz for itself when it received several nominations in the Oscars. Jane Campion, the director of the film, too received a nomination for the film. And unlike the movie itself, she bagged an award at the ceremony a few hours ago. With this win, Campion became the third woman to win the best director award at Oscar after Chloe Zhao win for Nomadland in 2021 and Kathryn Bigelow win for Hurt Locker in 2010.

With Jane’s win, a lady has won the Oscar for best director for a second year. She also created history by bagging two nominations in this year’s Academy Awards. However, this win at the Oscars is not her first. Jane had previously won the best original screenplay award in 1994 for The Piano.

Campion won for a western drama film, The Power of the Dog, which develops around a chauvinist rancher who torments the life of those around him. This includes his brother, his wife, and the wife’s son. The film had in total won 12 nominations in Oscar this year. Before the Oscar, Jane Campion has won several major awards including the Critics Choice Awards, the BAFTA Awards, and the Directors Guild Awards.

During the acceptance speech, Jane Campion highly praised her fellow colleagues and explains her love for directing and creating a world with a team of storytellers. “I just wanted to say big love to my fellow nominees. I love you all, you’re all so extraordinarily talented, and it could have been any of you,” the director said. She claims she was involved in the story so much that she created a world which can be sometimes overwhelming. Jane expresses her gratitude to all the actors working with her and making the film even more successful with their acting skills.

She even offered the final thank you to Thomas Savage, the author of the novel from which the film came about. She confesses, “It would be impossible without the man I never met, Thomas Savage. He wrote about cruelty, wanting the opposite, kindness. Thank you, Academy. It’s a lifetime honor.”

In the press interview room backstage after the ceremony was over, she shared how she believed they will encourage more and more women to devote their talent to the industry. She feels many more women have to come who will be fourth, a fifth, a sixth, a seventh, and an eighth to win the Oscars.
