Indeed, A Deadly American Marriage is very much based on the shocking real-life homicide of Jason Corbett, an Irish widower and father of two children, Sarah and Jack. In 2011, Corbett tied the knot for a second time with Molly Martens and shifted his children from Ireland to North Carolina to start a blissful married life in America. However, in 2015, he lost his life in a reported scuffle with his wife, Molly Martens, and her father, Thomas Martens, who is a former FBI agent.

Corbett's death and the suspicious circumstances surrounding it were a big subject of media coverage in Ireland. Two years later, Martens and her father were found guilty of the crime with a charge of second-degree m----r. However, in a turn of events last year, after they made a plea bargain to reduce charges, their convictions were later reversed, and they were granted release.
