For those hoping to return to Hawkins sooner rather than later, producers' most current statements can cause concern. Matt and Ross Duffer have been candid about the uncertainty surrounding the season 5 timeline. Netflix has officially announced a 2025 release window for the eight-episode finale, but Matt Duffer's recent conversation with Variety suggests this timeline might be ambitious. As a result, the first part may still arrive in 2025, while the second could be delayed until 2026.

The signs of a potential delay are there. Filming began on January 8, 2024, and wrapped on December 20, 2024—a full year of production that hints at the ambitious scope of these final episodes. After season 4's tight production schedule, which had the team dropping in visual effects shots just a day before launch, Ross Duffer hopes to avoid similar last-minute rushes this time around.

On top of that, the final season will be worth holding out for, with an 18-month time skip to fall 1987. Familiar faces like Millie Bobby Brown and Finn Wolfhard will return, joined by Terminator legend Linda Hamilton. The plot will address the aftermath of season 4's cliffhanger, when Upside Down began mixing with Hawkins and build towards an inescapable faceoff with Vecna.
