One Hundred Years of Solitude is a 1967 novel by Gabriel García Marquez that tells the epic tale of the Buendía family across multiple generations. At the heart of this story is the family patriarch, José Arcadio Buendía, who founded the fictional town of Macondo. While it offers a metaphorical and critical lens on Colombian history, from its origins to modern times, the book is a shining example of magic realism, weaving myth into a fictional narrative to reflect historical events.
The series features a total of 16 episodes, split into two parts, with eight episodes each. Netflix has just announced the premiere date for part one, which will debut on December 11, 2024. The project is co-directed by Alex García López and Laura Mora, with production handled by the Colombian company Dynamo. The writing team includes José Rivera, Natalia Santa, Camila Brugés, María Camila Arias and Albatrós González.
Although it is not based on a true story, it draws from an extraordinary history, making the project a thrilling challenge for the directors.

Netflix might take bold steps to amp up its quality content, but when it fully commits to a project, it is hard not to be blown away. Alex García López recently shared with Netflix his experience directing episodes 1, 2, 3, 7, and 8 of One Hundred Years of Solitude, describing the process as a "challenge and an adventure." His goal, he emphasized, was to craft something authentic that lives up to the grandeur of an international production.
Laura Mora, who directed the remaining episodes, expressed immense pride both as a filmmaker and Colombian, highlighting their effort to honor the original source material. The series was also reportedly filmed entirely in Colombia, with the support of Gabriel García Marquez’s family.
