Is Henry Cavill Returning as Sherlock in 'Enola Holmes 3'? Here's Everything We Know
No one thought anyone would dare to take the mantle of Sherlock Holmes from Benedict Cumberbatch, arguably one of the best interpretations of the character. Yet Henry Cavill managed to steal the show as England's greatest detective in Enola Holmes, even with limited screen time. The anticipation for Henry Cavill’s return in Enola Holmes 3 is almost as high as it was for The Witcher and the DCU. While the latter two seem unlikely to move forward, Cavill’s Sherlock Holmes is expected to make a comeback for a third round in the Millie Bobby Brown-led Netflix series. The Man of Steel star has often expressed his interest in reprising the role in future installments of the Enola Holmes franchise.
That said, there is still no official confirmation of his return in the third installment. Cavill’s plate is pretty full right now, with major projects like Guy Ritchie’s In the Grey and the highly anticipated Highlander Reboot, which recently got some interesting plot updates from its creator. These commitments could pose a threat to Cavill’s much-anticipated return to the Netflix franchise, owing to possible scheduling conflicts. On top of that, the Argylle actor also has some conditions of his own for making this comeback.
If Cavill is to return as Sherlock, the creators will need to avoid repeating a mistake that has caused him headaches in his previous franchises.
The core reason Henry Cavill continues in Enola Holmes
Henry Cavill has openly shared how much he enjoyed working with co-star Millie Bobby Brown on the first Enola Holmes film. But fond memories alone are not enough to guarantee his return. In a 2022 interview with Total Film Magazine, the 41-year-old actor said he wanted to make sure the sequel was done right and that the franchise had a clear direction before he jumped on board for Enola Holmes 2. "It's important to make sure the tone of things is not lost in the potential excitement of franchises and universes," said Cavill.

This focus on getting things right was the main reason Cavill signed on for the second movie. He also said, "I have experience with franchises going places, and going quiet,” which may have been a nod to The Witcher, where he faced several creative differences. Even so, Cavill has shown excitement about playing Sherlock Holmes again, which makes his return for a third Enola Holmes film feel even more plausible.
