The wildest what-ifs take center stage in Hollywood, but even the brightest spotlights cannot outshine the oldest curse of showbiz spell book—nothing golden stays. Change is the only constant in an industry built on reinventions, but some departures hit harder than a plot twist in a season finale, and Henry Cavill’s journey is a prime example. First, the DCU pulled the rug from under his Superman legacy and then followed The Witcher, turning what seemed like an unshakable reign into a cautionary tale of Hollywood’s fickle loyalties.

The echoes of those farewells still linger, but as time has shown, no door stays shut forever in Tinseltown. So, could Cavill return to the world of swords and sorcery on Netflix?

Once upon a time in the boulevards of broken dreams, Henry Cavill announced his leave from The Witcher and never turned back. It has been nearly three years since. Though time does not soften the heartbreak, there is no coming back for Cavill in The Continent. The Man of Steel actor portrayed Geralt of Rivia for three Netflix installments and in an Instagram statement in October 2022, he broke the news to the fans.

“In my stead, the fantastic Mr. Liam Hemsworth will be taking up the mantle of the White Wolf,” Cavill wrote, extending his good wishes to the new Geralt. “Liam, good sir, this character has such a wonderful depth to him, enjoy diving in and seeing what you can find,” he added, leaving fans teary-eyed and unable to come to terms with the transition. Since then, Netflix and The Witcher crew have been on a mission to normalize this heroic switch.

That said, fans have not exactly welcomed the change with open arms.

Liam Hemsworth’s Geralt reign after Henry Cavill sparked critical backlash

Last year, industry insider MyTimeToShineHello on X conjured some behind-the-scenes snaps of The Witcher season 4 with an exclusive sneak peek at Liam Hemsworth as the Geralt of Rivia. Although Henry Cavill cast a spell too hard to break even after his Netflix exit, Hemsworth’s Geralt cast a negativity of magic that sparked a riot of laughter among fans. In the snaps, Hemsworth rocked a black ensemble in a leather jacket with a sword hung over his back, standing tall in a gray wig.

Hemsworth’s down-to-earth nature made the transition easier for the co-stars, but the fans were not even close. Although he left no stone unturned in his preparation, from diving deep into the legends by Andrzej Sapkowski to binge-watching the previous installments, the switch felt so glaring that fans were not letting it slide despite the inevitability. While a significant amount of time has passed since then, it remains to be seen if fans have caught up to the ways of fate yet.
