G.I. Jane has mostly received mixed reviews from the critics as well as audiences. In Rotten Tomatoes, the film has scored 50% and 53% in the audience meter.
Roger Ebert in his review, wrote, “The training sequences … are good cinema because Ridley Scott, the director, brings a documentary attention to them and because Demi Moore, having bitten off a great deal here, proves she can chew it.”

Meanwhile, Empire felt the movie was “confused: overlong, it begins by being about a woman battling to overcome prejudice, and ends up a gun-toting Arab-killing action movie.”
