Netflix’s The Witcher has an abundance of lore and mythology for fans to unravel. There are so many characters and storylines that it becomes difficult for viewers to wrap their heads around it. Whether it’s the origins of the monsters, witchers or the alliances and wars among factions on the Continent. But among all those things, the question that has constantly been burning viewers’ minds is Ciri.

What is the truth behind this entwining of fates between the child of Elder blood and mutant? Is she a Witcher’s daughter?

Is Ciri Geralt’s daughter in The Witcher? 

Ciri, born Princess Cirilla Fiona Elen Riannon, is the granddaughter of Queen Calanthe and the sole heir to the Cintran throne. She is the daughter of Princess Pavetta and a knight named Duny. However, technically, Geralt is her adoptive father or guardian, which stems from the Law of Surprise. In The Witcher season 1, fans saw Geralt save Duny when Calanthe issued a kill order for the cursed man asking for her daughter’s hand in marriage. 

In his thanks, Duny, also known as Emhyr var Emreis, requested the monster slayer to make any wish so he could repay his debt. Although Geralt initially resisted, he eventually agreed to Duny’s request and invoked the Law of Surprise. Less did he know he would get his and Pavetta’s daughter, who was secretly pregnant at that moment.

The White Wolf did not know what his ancient tradition meant and what it would entail for him.

What does the Law of Surprise mean? 

According to the Law of Surprise, the person whose life has been saved on the verge of death must pay back with the most precious thing they possess. In several cases, this leads to the birth of a new puppy or a bumper crop during the next harvest. However, owing to the unpredictable nature of pregnancy, it can also result in the claimant being able to claim a surprise newborn, also known as a Child Surprise.

This is what happened with Ciri and Geralt, who were bound by destiny long before the girl came into the world. However, the mutant had no wish to claim her until Nilfgaard attacked Cintra and the girl had no one but him. In three seasons of the fantasy drama, fans have witnessed that these two formed a father-daughter bond. Or one can say he has become an actual parent considering his birth father has gone rogue and wishes to marry her to fulfill a prophecy.
