Chungmuro, once the heart of the South Korean film industry from the 1960s to the 1990s, is the backdrop of this fictional comedy, which delves into the challenges faced by aspiring filmmakers during its golden era. The series provides a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the making of the 1982 erotic box-office sensation, Madame Aema.

Written and directed by Lee Hae Young, known for works like Believer and Phantom, Aema is produced by The Lamp, famed for Taxi Driver and Samjin Company English Class.

Netflix has officially announced that Aema will be arriving on the streaming platform in the third quarter of 2025 (July- September.)

In Aema, Lee Ha Nee leads as Jung Hee Ran, bringing her experience from Netflix-licensed dramas like Be Melodramatic and The Fiery Priest. Bang Hyo Rin, making her television and Netflix debut, plays Shin Joo Ae, adding fresh talent to the series. Jin Seon Kyu portrays Koo Joong Ho, a seasoned actor who has graced numerous Netflix Originals, including Kingdom and Vincenzo. Jo Hyun Chul, known for Deserter Pursuit, takes on the role of Kwak In Woo, further solidifying the star-studded cast.
About Aema's production
On September 11th, 2023, Netflix formally confirmed that Aema would be produced, and filming got underway. On March 31st, 2024, the production came to an end after months of filming.
With Korean content dominating non-English views on Netflix, the streaming giant seized the opportunity to ride the wave of global Korean entertainment, capitalizing on its ever-growing international popularity.
Netflix joined forces with leading broadcast giant for 2025 expansion
To increase the global reach of Korean entertainment, Netflix formed a significant partnership with SBS, a well-known South Korean broadcaster. Netflix will provide its local members with new SBS dramas, variety shows, and cultural programming as part of the agreement. In the second half of 2025, a few of these new games will make their simultaneous global debuts. Netflix will also be in charge of these productions, dubbing, regional promotion, and subtitling.

Taking advantage of the growing demand for K-dramas around the world, Netflix said in 2024 that it will invest $2.5 billion in South Korean creative content over the next four years. The streaming service intends to add to the already extensive selection of movies, TV shows, reality shows, music, and video games available in South Korea. Netflix's strategy to take its Korean content offerings to new heights has advanced with the recent cooperation with SBS.
