Geralt of Rivia from The Witcher saga is without a doubt one of the most loved characters out there. This monster-slaying mutant has stolen the hearts of fans across TV and video games. While it is always going to be tough for fans to picture anyone other than Henry Cavill in the role, a big part of why Geralt has earned such a special place in the hearts of fans is Doug Cockle. He has been the voice behind Geralt since the very first game came out back in 2007 on PC, and now, after all this time, his voice is finally making its way to TV.

As the release of The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep draws near, Cockle’s director is praising his talent for bringing Geralt to life.

During a recent interview with Animation Scoop, The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep director Kang Hei Chul was full of praise for Doug Cockle’s performance as Geralt in the upcoming animated series. Doug Cockle, humbled by the praise, took to X to say, “Well shoot…. Now I’m blushing… Thank you Kang Hei Chul. Very kind of you.” The director, in his interview, recalled the first time Cockle read his lines in the recording studio and blew everyone away.

All of our concerns and stresses about finding Geralt’s voice completely vanished,” said Hei Chul. Instead of simply performing the lines, Cockle also expressed the inner turmoil, rationality, and even moments of humor that Geralt often displays. He brought to life the smallest details, from his physical movements to his intricate emotional layers, and fully transformed into the character. Hei Chul also added that Cockle “understood the character in every sense”. Now, the OG Geralt is passing on his wisdom to the next actor to take on the role.

Cockle mentioned the “slight dourness” Cavill brought to the character, adding, “I call him a reluctant hero.” For Cockle, that is the key trait to master when playing Geralt—something Hemsworth could learn from. And given how well Cockle knows Geralt, something even his Sirens of the Deep director has now confirmed, there is probably no one better suited to give Hemsworth advice on how to nail the character truly.
