Time and again, various media reports have suggested how the late Queen Elizabeth adored Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. She was extremely welcoming of the former American actress and provided her with love and warmth. However, the former monarch was not very ecstatic when the Duke asked her permission to marry the love of his life.

As per the Royal Marriages Act 1772, the descendants of King George II need to take the permission of the monarch to take the vows. Prince Harry was not unknown to the royal protocol and thus visited his grandmother before popping the big question to Meghan Markle at the Nottingham cottage. However, what could have been a joyous and heartfelt moment between him and his grandmother ended up with the Duke being flabbergasted. 

Why Prince Harry was confused by Queen Elizabeth’s answer?

Revealing his conversation with Her Majesty, Prince Harry wrote in Spare that he was taken aback by his grandmother’s wordplay. The Sussex royal started the discussion with the late Queen by saying, “I’ve been told that I have to ask your permission before I can propose.” She was surprised by the use of have and made sure to take a jibe at the Duke for the same.

The matriarch replied sarcastically, “Well then, I suppose I have to say yes.” The tone of the late Queen did not sit well with the 38-year-old, and he was left confused about how to react. “I’d never known Granny to do any wordplay. And this would be a surpassingly bizarre moment for her to start. But maybe she just saw the chance to play off my unfortunate use of the word ‘have’ and couldn’t resist,” Prince Harry wrote while describing his emotions as mentioned by Geo News.

Meanwhile, it took the Duke of Sussex a few minutes to digest his grandmother’s sarcasm and realize that he had permission to enter the matrimonial bond with Meghan Markle. Narrating the fabulous moment, he called himself a muppet in Spare.
