A forgotten horror flick starring a shirtless Ryan Reynolds? A blockbuster extravaganza that forever changed the way the world looked at the Mattel trademark doll, Barbie? The evidence of Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone being one, if not the best, on-screen pairing in superhero cinema? A completely educational show where the host looks a renowned Professor of History straight in the eye and asks if Jesus was the first celebrity victim of cancel culture? Netflix has got it all. However, at the moment, the streaming mogul is in possession of an A24 film that is parading over all.

Never one to let a good ghost go unhaunted, Netflix has taken up its usual post as the last refuge of overlooked brilliance, now streaming an independent horror gem that deserved a standing ovation long before it settled for a second chance.

The godfather of streaming has quite literally brought back the dead, or a movie where those dead do make surprising cameos, mostly na---, for its audience. With 2025 rolling in, the streamer has taken a dive in the A24 treasure and hunted out the 2018 Ari Aster directorial, Hereditary, which is currently streaming on Netflix.

To say that Hereditary was underrated would not be right given how the movie garnered an approximate box office collection of $87 million worldwide against a production budget of $10 million. However, the movie still stands in the shadows when compared to the overbearing popularity of horror movie franchises such as The Conjuring.

While the streamer may have sheltered an independent film by Ari Aster, it seems to have a personal in-house horror movie mastermind.

Netflix's personal horror Marvel man

Akin to how Marvel is constantly enriching its slate with more spandex-wearing world warriors, Netflix, in its own humanely budgeted manner, is following its league with its original horror franchises directed by the Internet's favorite horror mastermind, Mike Flanagan. The director has given the OTT Mogul its iconic 'Haunting' series' and, around Halloween time each year, adds another gory layer to the cake.

Mike Flanagan was first embraced by Netflix with The Haunting of Hill House, and ever since then there has been no looking back for the director, and in a lot of cases, the actors as well, with Flanagan being a believer of the mind choosing a familiar hell rather than an unfamiliar heaven.
