“That was a rage that…” – Will Smith Finally Opens Up on What Went Behind Slapping Chris Rock During Oscars

The eventful night at the 2022 Oscars is one that will keep haunting Will Smith his entire life. He had slapped the host of the night, Chris Rock, across the face. The comedian had made a joke about Smith’s wife Jada Pinkett’s condition that did not sit well with the star. His actions resulted in a chain of events that included him losing out on projects, getting banned from the Academy, and receiving constant backlash from celebs and the public.

After months of silence and keeping a low profile, Smith guested on The Daily Show with Trevor Noah to talk about the Oscars Slapgate.

Will Smith lost his cool at the Oscars

The Men in Black star disclosed that he was going through some issues when he lost his cool at the event. All those emotions came to head all at once, and he acted without thinking. “I was gone. That was a rage that had been bottled for a really long time,” he said. Will Smith did not reveal what was plaguing him at that time, but he was quick to admit his reasons do not justify his actions still.

That night after the fiasco, the actor went home to his 9-year-old nephew. He narrated the heartfelt story when his nephew asked him why he slapped that man, rendering Smith emotional. Trevor Noah, who had known the Hollywood bigwig for years now, vouched for him. On the late-night talk show, he defended him that Smith is just human and everyone makes mistakes.

The interview took several emotional turns as Smith got teary-eyed as he tried to express his regret over his actions. He has issued several apologies to Rock and his family, but the comedian is not ready to accept his apology yet. The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air actor is currently going through a process of forgiving himself for his mistakes.
