“I try not to…” – Jane Fonda Discloses Her Apprehensions of Sydney Sweeney Taking Over Her Role in Cult Classic Barbarella
Remakes and reboots are not going anywhere. On one hand, it helps to bring an older forgotten classic into the public consciousness once again. However, sometimes a remake might leave the fans of the originals a tad bit disappointed if it fails to hit the nail on the head. It is why Jane Fonda is not exactly thrilled about Sydney Sweeney replacing her in the reboot of Barbarella.
The Euphoria star is probably the current generation’s sex symbol, but Fonda was her predecessor. The 80-something actress set the screens ablaze with her sensual turn in the classic movie back in 1968. The Emmy-nominated actress can definitely up the temperature, but can she live up to Fonda’s expectations?

It is good that she could convince her parents to let her pursue acting because, for her next project, Barbarella, Sydney Sweeney is collaborating with Sony Pictures. The picture is a remake of the 1968 classic starring Jane Fonda. However, when the latter got wind of the news, she was not thrilled about it. She expressed her doubt about the project in her recent interview.
“I try not to [think about it]. Because I worry about what it’s going to be,” she said during her latest The Hollywood Reporter interview. In fact, the 85-year-old wanted to add a feminist twist to the sequel. She had pitched the idea to the late producer, Dino De Laurentiis., who did not entertain her idea at all.
The flick was based on the French comic book series and was directed by Fonda’s ex-husband, Roger Vadim. Upon its release, the movie was not a blockbuster, but it quickly attained a cult status and Fonda became a sex symbol of the 60s.

The movie followed Fonda’s character, a 41st-century astronaut. Her mission takes her to the past to find an evil scientist, Durand Durand who is in possession of Positronic Ray. If not stopped in time, he will lead to the destruction of the world. The movie is fondly remembered for its retro-futuristic costumes and erotic scenes involving a sexual pleasure machine.
According to EW, previously Bob Evans’ Barbarella Goes Down starring Jane didn’t come to fruition. Neither did Robert Rodriguez’s proposed sequel starring Rose McGowan.
