“I heard that Ryan Gosling…” – How Austin Butler Took Inspiration to Prepare for His Oscar-Nominated Role of Elvis
Austin Butler took inspiration from the Canadian actor Ryan Gosling for his Oscar-nominated film, Elvis, to prepare for his character. To fit into a character, the actors sometimes have to gain weight or lose it. Sometimes they have to make a muscular body and at times they have to be extremely skinny. As easy as it sounds, the process is indeed incredibly hard. And in his recent interview, Butler opened up about the hardships as well.
Elvis is a 2022 film that also won the Golden Globe Awards 2023. In his interview with Variety, the actor talked about how his agent told him to put on some weight to portray the aged Elvis Presley. While talking about it, the American actor revealed he took inspiration from the La La Land actor. “I heard that Ryan Gosling, when he was going to do ‘The Lovely Bones,’ had microwaved Häagen-Dazs and would drink it.” Butler took inspiration from there and got two dozen (24 pieces) doughnuts and ate them all.

At first, he liked doing it. But the fun lasted for only a week. The actor then felt awful about himself as he started to gain some weight. During this conversation, he also talked about how the Covid pandemic affected his film and had to face difficulties. After a lot of trials, finally, the film saw the light of day only to win the hearts of the viewers.

How did Elvis starring Austin Butler do?
Directed by Baz Luhrmann, the 2022 film, Elvis got overall positive reviews. It is a biographical drama that follows the life of the American rock and roll singer and actor Elvis Presley. The story is from the perspective of his manager, Colonel Tom Parker. The film got 7.4/10 IMDb and 77% ratings on Rotten Tomatoes.
In addition to positive reviews, the movie also got nominated for three categories in the Golden Globe Awards in 2023. Of those, Butler won Best Actor in Drama Motion Pictures. Moreover, the film is nominated for eight Academy Awards this year. The categories are best picture, production design, cinematography, costumes, editing, makeup, and hairstyling, sound, and of course, the best actor.
