Fans had been waiting for The Witcher to air on the screens forever. The last of Henry Cavill in his Geralt of Rivia costume was nearing. Moreover, after the cliffhanger in Volume 1 of Season 3, the anticipation was doubled. It has been a little more than a week since Volume 2 aired on Netflix. As Yennefer and Geralt’s relationship blossomed, so did the impending doom of seeing fan-favorite chemistry fade away in the next season. Just when their love had finally reached a stable stage, the show’s creators now have a new challenge to find an equally enthralling chemistry.

As the Australian counterpart of Cavill gears up to make his debut as a Witcher in season 4, Yennefer’s farewell to the current Geralt was heartbreaking. This single dialogue made the exit 100 times more painful. 

Farewells are sad, but this one was way sadder

Liam Hemsworth is all set to be cast as the next Geralt of Rivia in Season 4. While this shot up hopes of seeing a befitting story of the Man of Steel actor’s exit from the show, the makers had something else in mind. Yennefer’s dialogue to Cavill in the end, “Tell me this isn’t the last time I’ll see you” turned out to be way more painful than we expected. After the Thanned Coup incident, Yennefer and Geralt’s relationship had taken a turn of more intimacy and love between the two. 

Their tumultuous relationship throughout the three seasons finally found its moments of complete acceptance. And this one dialogue leaves the gates open again. The open-ended exit of Cavill’s Geralt again raises the question of how Anya Chalotra’s on-screen love will blossom in the next season.

This is not exactly the trajectory the fans expected. Hemsworth’s Geralt has a heavier weight to carry on his shoulders now.

Fans were looking forward to a rather different ending, one explaining how the actors would be switched. In addition, hopes for a look into The Witcher universe expansion were also squashed. And the cherry on the cake was the rather sad coincidence of Yennefer’s last words. Cavill’s exit leaves an aching thought in fans’ minds: What exactly should they expect from the upcoming season 4? Yennefer has pretty much been the center of the show along with Cavill since season 1.

The Witcher’s main couple will now be Chalotra and Hemsworth, with big shoes to fill in. How Hemsworth carries it forward and how the story of the characters transpired, only time will tell.
