Apart from the reason mentioned above, Jonathan Byers could be the martyr Stranger Things need in season 5. Unlike most of the characters, the horror series did not see much transformation in him. For instance, fans saw in the penultimate season how he failed to tell Nancy that he wanted to go to community college. Then he got into this whole drug thing just because he could not face the reality of his life.

There are several reasons why Jonathan cannot be redeemed in the last season when there are bigger problems lingering around Hawkins.
