How ‘Sex Education’ Turned a Hated Character Into One Half of an Unlikely Pairing in Season 4
In Netflix’s Sex Education series, there is no shortage of characters that one can’t help but like. At the same time, there are those that most viewers initially struggled to bear. However, through the characterization of them all, the show suggests that behaviors can be quite complex and deceiving if judged too early. After all, even the most hated characters of seasons 1 and 2, Ruby would eventually go on to garner a cult following of her own.
Similarly, season 3 left audiences fuming at another character, who would turn a page in season 4 only to fall for a ‘maverick’.

In the previous season, Otis finally did what many had been waiting for. Ultimately, he professed his love for Maeve in a voicemail. By keeping this voicemail from Maeve, Isaac lost the support of many who were initially rooting for him. Now in season 4, a still bitter Isaac crossed paths with Maeve’s best friend Aimee at Cavendish College. With her innocent charm, Aimee stole his tortured soul and injected some infectious optimism into his life.
Through a touching twist of fate, the fourth and final season of Sex Education saw Isaac redeem his actions by returning the favor extended by Aimee. By revealing the therapeutic power of art to her, he helped her heal the harrowing trauma that had plagued her since season 3. For those who wanted to experience the magic of connecting hearts, their story provided all the relief that no other couple could offer.
This was even more so, especially since all the loved pairings of the show would eventually fade away in season 4.

Even at the cost of abandoning their previous partners, the main characters of Otis and Maeve finally ended up together in the previous season, only to separate once again in the most anti-climatic way after a tumultuous long-distance stint. Meanwhile, for many who wanted Ruby and Otis to reunite, season 4 showed no compassion there either, despite her devoted attempts to pull Otis from a crumbling relationship with Maeve.
While the fourth season warmed many hearts with Aimee and Isaac’s budding love, the same cannot be said about the other couples on the sidelines. The majority of other fan-favorite characters like Eric, Ruby, and Jackson would remain single throughout. So, the show may have imparted some golden nuggets in terms of sexual awareness, but it disappointed fans who were shipping these couples.
